Beyond Silence: Fire, Ice, and Community at the SaunSation 2026 Festival

Forget everything you know about classic wellness centers. Forget the image of the sauna as a dark, silent, and solemn place. What we experienced this July at the SaunSation festival, held at the Athena Ossendrecht facilities in the Netherlands, was a true sensory revolution and one of the most intense naturist experiences of our European road trip.
When we parked our campervan at the festival grounds, we didn’t quite know what we were in for. We are used to the pure air of the mountains and the fresh river waters of the Pyrenees, but an extreme wellness marathon was waiting for us.
A Marathon of Contrasts: From a «Rave» to Valhalla
SaunSation is not just a spa day; it is a full-blown festival. For two days, we took part in an absolute marathon of Aufguss rituals (guided sessions by Sauna Masters) where extreme heat blended with pure creativity.
We started at 9:00 AM with the Wake and Rave, sweating at 90ºC to techno beats, only to step outside and find trays of freshly baked croissants and coffee waiting for us. We experienced the Traditional Banja, where a massage with wet birch branches connected us to the deepest, most ancestral roots of the forest. We melted into the Latin music and cocktails at Mojito Madness (where, as true Mediterraneans, we couldn’t resist dancing!), and we reached the absolute limit of meditation and endurance in the Killing Me Steamly session, led by Thomas, the very soul of the event.
But if there is one thing that truly tests the human body, it is the Ice Plunge. After experiencing extreme heat, submerging yourself in an 8ºC tub filled with real ice cubes is a brutal shock. However, if you control your breathing and surrender to the cold, the physical and mental «reset» is absolutely unmatched.
The Power of the Tribe: The Tunnel of Honor
Beyond the spectacular thermal sessions, what we truly carry in our hearts is the community. At SaunSation, we experienced naturism in its highest expression of brotherhood.
We will never forget the closing sauna. The entire cabin, packed to the brim, singing The Final Countdown at the top of their lungs while the heat reached its peak. And the real magic happened when the doors opened: outside, a «tunnel of honor» was waiting for us. The organizers and fellow campers stood there, clapping and cheering for everyone coming out of the steam. It gave us instant goosebumps. It is in these moments that you realize we are not just people sharing a clothes-free space; we are a tribe that supports, respects, and celebrates life together.
Bringing Our Essence
As founders of Freehiking and wellness therapists, we couldn’t attend without bringing our own touch. We set up our massage table next to the campervan and had the privilege of offering Tantra Energy Massage sessions to some of the attendees. Being able to provide a space for connection and conscious touch under the Dutch trees brought the weekend—dedicated to body and soul—full circle.
We want to thank the Athena Ossendrecht organization, and especially Thomas, for making this historic first edition possible. We left the Netherlands with cleansed skin, full lungs, and renewed energy to keep adding kilometers to our road trip.
Freedom takes many forms: sometimes it is hiking naked on a mountain peak, and sometimes, it is singing at 90ºC surrounded by friends.
See you at the next festival (or on the trails)!
